Having a good understanding how something works and why it works is very important if we are to be better problem solvers. One step towards that understanding is always ask yourself the following questions:
“What is ‘X’ similar to?”
“If it is similar to Y, what similarities are there?”
“What are the possible differences?”
“When will these differences and similarities matter?”
By asking such questions, it actually makes me do the following:
Drawing the dots to something I am more familiar with.
Widen my perspectives on understanding the topic I am studying.
‘Transfer’ what I have learned from something familiar to something less familiar.
Thinking about the differences helps me to understand the applications of the topic.
Understanding the similarities and differences helps me to also understand how it works out and when there may be exceptions.
To me, by asking these questions, I get to quickly pick up the different topics that I am curious to learn and from there move on to deepening the knowledge further, through online resource and also Large Language Models. :)
