Generative AI is definitely here to stay and it will become as ubiquitous as calculators and computers. Generative AI will also be another channel for employees to “share” data and information, data and information that might provide insights into companies competitive advantage, such as next patent filing, blockbuster feature. Such an information leak has already started with Samsung now banning staff from using ChatGPT.
In a Knowledge Economy, knowledge are assets and any leak can be detrimental. However, banning the use of Generative AI, I felt is too harsh given the amount of productivity gains businesses can have if more and more employees use it for their tasks, especially those that requires a lot of writing and images.
How shall we tackle this then? Data Literacy!

In my opinion, as we get more people to start working on data, to mine data for useful information that can lead to better decision making, employees will start to have a good idea what data can or cannot do. As this intuition improves, through more and more number crunching and analysis, employees will become more sensitive on what can or cannot be shared across. This sensitivity will help in reducing the incidence of secrets or sensitive knowledge crossing the “chasm” to a point-of-no-return, damaging the company.
Besides increasing the sensitivity, employees at the same time are literate enough to lookout for more use cases of data, increasing the value gotten from existing data collected and leading to more buy-in for data governance which by itself can be very difficult to achieve in most companies that I have seen.
As we move towards an era where we need to use Generative AI for our work, I felt that it is very urgent and important for any businesses to start uplifting the data literacy of their employees. (Side Note: if your company or dept is looking to do that please reach out to me on LinkedIn)
