The past few months like any other months, I have gotten a lot of questions on how to become a data scientist/AI Professionals and also the roadmap to getting one. One of the biggest “concern” however for most newbies is…
Does Data Scientist earn a lot?
Well, the quick answer to that is I have not seen a data scientist having to keep worrying about their expenses, mortgage, etc. What I can conclude so far then, for most of them, is their salary can cover their expenditure. Despite the tech layoff, I have not seen a data scientist or AI professional struggling with their expenses, to give another perspective.
Anyway, if you are wondering a lot about this question, with it being a showstopper for you, then my suggestion is not to join the profession. In fact, for any profession these days, joining for the sake of a higher salary will never make you last long in a job.
The job consists of a lot of frustration, coding on computers is relatively the least of it, to be honest. One “frustration” is to commit a lot of time to upkeep your knowledge of the field, given the constant development of the technology, and algorithms. Not forgetting that you will have to deal with office politics at the same time given that the job may involve project members from quite a few departments.
Now in this newsletter, I will like to get to the most fundamental instead! Is the job suitable for you?
Who is it suitable?
If you like mathematics, solving puzzles, and learning new things excites you, you are halfway there!
This job like most of the newly created job in the Knowledge Economy requires a lot of critical thinking, system thinking, logical thinking, etc. Data scientists uses mathematics, applied to data, to test their hypothesis and solve the business puzzles at hand. So if you like to solve puzzles and mathematics, this is a job for you.
I hope to keep the newsletter open to as many as possible. If you have benefitted much from the newsletter and will like to join my cause, consider making a “book" donation. Link at the bottom of the newsletter or here. :)
Given that this is a developing area right now, new topics and areas will come up that needs to be picked up. The development is so fast, it can be overwhelming at times and thus you will need to keep learning. In this job, you will need to learn effectively and more efficiently as well.
If you have been furiously nodding your head through the above section. Let me extend a warm welcome to you to the industry and I hope that you can continuously contribute to the society and improve your live!
