Till now, most of you may know that I am a strong believer of business value, that the data scientist’s value comes from providing solutions to business problems through data.
In order to achieve that, the thought process from how to collect the relevant data to strategizing based on the insights needs to be constantly strengthened. While structuring the process, the data scientist needs to bring in the different tools and putting them together.
There are two ways to excel at structuring the thought process, firstly the data scientist needs to expand his/her repertoire of tools available to him. He needs to know how to use it, what is its strengths and weaknesses.
Secondly, and the most important, is when do you use the tools. Which stage of the solution should the tools be used? Is it in a circumstance where the strengths matter more and the weaknesses matter less?
If you look deeper, the first way is about knowing what the tools are. The second way is more on when to use it. Using a cooking example, the first way is knowing what ingredients to use, and the second way is about the stages of cooking.
I hope to keep the newsletter open to as many as possible. :) If you have benefited much from my posts and will like to join my cause, consider making a “book" donation. Link at the bottom of the newsletter or here. :)
Which is why the data scientist needs to constantly learn, to satisfy the “What to use?” and needs more hands-on to determine the “When to use?”, which is where all the value comes from.
So what are the possible learning resources for Data Scientist? I have written a post on it, you can refer to it here (Good Learning Resources for Data Scientists). Do network with other people as well get them to share their experience while you share yours. It is one of the reasons I co-founded DataScience SG with my friend, Kai Xin. It provides anyone in Singapore an opportunity to learn from each other. I am proud to say we are just completed our 10-year anniversary celebration so I know we are contributing value to the community :)

For me the focus is less on the tools but more on the problems. At industry level, more or less you can learn what and how to use the tools if you have the right problem to solve but not always the other way around.
